The Penal Colony

When they landed in Porto Sinzias, on the southeastern coast of Sardinia, It was summer. And to be more precise it was; 11 August 1875.

Then they were uninhabited beaches, well unlike as it appears today on the coast of the area. THE;the boat was carrying thirty prisoners and seven prison guards. Led by Knight Eugenio Cicognani, went with great difficulty in;within the Earth, due to the dense vegetation and the;total absence of trails. The territory was to appear wild and unspoiled. Objective of;Inspector-General of prisons was to establish a first home, reclaim and restore the land uninhabited for centuries, 350 years for the;accuracy. Soon other detainees arrived that helped in the;artwork of reclamation and construction, and records report that after the second year, in the area there were over three hundred convicts, all previous work experience in;construction. In 1877 was born, seven km from the landing place, the abode of prisoners. On the promontory of Praidis, between two Brooks, the Guttur Frascu and Cala sa Figu. Soon they were working for a Carpenter, f workshops, a carpentry and a infirmary. Within the main structure over the cells and accommodations for the captors was the Pharmacy, an emergency room, even a post office and a telephone station. In areas that were more unhealthy, not yet reclaimed, the branches were built, wooden houses, designed to accommodate no more than ten detainees. Interesting to note that the Windows, to prevent the passage of deadly mosquitoes, were of the thick metal mesh. Ten were detachments, that allowed not only the;food independence, but allowed a surplus in production that was dedicated to marketing. The main crops were vineyards, Citrus, wheat, cereals and legumes. The thick forests were sfoltiti and in part used for the production of coal.

You count that in 1918, Despite the deaths of prisoners due to malaria and from influences coal production had come to 1600 tons and in subsequent years this threshold would be exceeded. At the beginning of the 20th century were about 800 prisoners who resided in prisons, that in the meantime had become self-sufficient entity. The detainee had to support themselves with their work, and this was one of the most efficient methods for inserting the;the social internal plots.
